My name is Jenny Chapman.

I am a qualified Specialist Dyslexia Teacher and Assessor. I have a PG Cert SpLD (Dyslexia) with APC (Assessment Practising Certificate).  I am an Associate Member of the British Dyslexia Association.

I divide my time between providing specialist teaching in a school and assessing children aged 7-13.  This enables me to understand children's needs and make realistic recommendations that can easily be put into place in school.

Based in Egham, I am ideally located to assess children in the Windsor, Staines and Woking areas.  My location close to the M25 and main trainline to London Waterloo makes me accessible to families further afield from South West London to Reading.

How It Works

The assessment process

Initial consultation

Assessment Day

Before setting a date for assessment, I will talk to you about your child.  This will enable me to find out more about their personal situation; what they enjoy and the barriers that are getting in the way.

Only then can I decide if a dyslexia assessment is the best route for your child.  If it isn't, I wil be able to make recommendations of alternate next steps.

All assessments for dyslexia must follow guidelines from the SpLD Standards Committee (SASC).  They regulate both the assessment process and the diagnostic assessment report that follows. This ensures all dyslexia assessments are conducted to the same standards.

A series of tests will be carried out, these will assess a range of cognitive performance and academic ability.

Children tend to enjoy these activities as they are short and engaging.  Rest and (most importantly) snack breaks are introduced as and when needed.
The whole assessment lasts approximately 3.5 hours.

Background information

Once an assessment is booked, I will send you background information questionnaires for both home and school.  These give you and your child's school the chance to explain how the child is getting on academically and what is getting in the way.

This will help me understand your child and prepare to assess in a way that suits your child best.

If it is more convenient, I can take this information over the phone.

What happens next?

After the assessment, I will look at assessment performance together with background information and observations from assessment to decide on a diagnosis.  

I will then write a detailed report explaining your child's strengths and areas of weakness.  The report concludes with recommendations to aid your child's learning in school and at home.  This may include suggestions for specialist tuition and/or recommendations for exam access arrangements.

I will arrange a telephone appointment to discuss the report.  At any time a parent is able to contact me to discuss the report in greater depth.

How much does it cost?

How old does my child need to be?

A full diagnostic assessment will cost £500.

Children can be assessed from the age of 7. To decide if literacy challenges are down to a specific learning difficulty rather than gaps in learning, it is better to wait until your child is 8 or at least well into Year 3.
If you are interested in an assessment of needs (without diagnosis), which will give guidance on how best to support your child, this can be arranged from the age of 6.


 

When can you assess my child?

My assessment slots are on Wednesday and Fridays or anytime during school holidays.

My current waiting time is around 6-8 weeks.

Where can you assess my child?

Most assessments are carried out at my home in Egham.  However, it is sometimes possible to arrange assessment at your child's school.  This can be discussed when arranging an assessment.

Do I have to stay while my child is assessed?

No. I have an up to date DBS certificate, you can feel confident that your child will be in safe hands.  If you do wish to stay, or feel your child may be anxious without you, you are welcome to do so.
